Michael Salerno was born in Wakefield, RI to hard working parents Charles and Catherine Salerno, where he fell in love with photography while at South Kingstown High School. He concentrated on photography, filmmaking, and photolithography while at the University of Rhode Island in Kingston, receiving a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree.
At Wilson Publishing in Wakefield, RI as a staff photographer for over a decade, Michael honed his photojournalistic skills and became adept at meeting tight deadlines and being creative on the fly. He won numerous news photography awards from both the Rhode Island Press Association and New England Press Association yearly competitions.
Since 1995 Michael has freelanced for the Communications and Marketing Department at the University of Rhode Island, providing images for print, publications, and the web. His photographs of URI faculty and students have run in newspapers and magazines across the country and worldwide. Michael keeps his hand in journalism, by having his photos run in the Newport Daily News and the South County Independent newspapers.
